By Jack Bourassa (As appeared in the Nov. 29, 2017 issue of 'Yellowknifer')  We were slightly amused in recent weeks to see Premier Bob McLeod issue a 'red alert' to our federal government. I certainly do feel there is a lot to be 'alerted' about as it comes to the lack of commitment by the feds to Northern living and how services are delivered to our citizens.

Across the country there is an increasingly accepted view that raising the minimum wage is both socially responsible and of net benefit to the economy. Jack Bourassa Regional Executive Vice President, PSAC North By now many labour organizations across the country have spoken out in condemnation of the acts that we all witnessed in Charlottesville, Virginia on Aug. 12. Given the tight-knit and diverse nature of our own community, I feel as REVP at PSAC North that we must not only denounce in the strongest terms what occurred, but moving forward, tackle the lingering impact of that weekend.

Our Family Fun Day in support of affordable, high quality child care in Canada this Saturday in Yellowknife was a huge success! We welcomed more than 200 children and their families for a day of fun activities and a great learning experience for parents about what universal child care could look like in Canada.

By Jack Bourassa, Regional Executive Vice President, PSAC North Canadian families need to have access to a universal, affordable child care system that helps everyone equally. The hodgepodge system of child care we have in Canada now, with every province and territory taking their own approach, is hurting families and failing to support Indigenous Peoples.

Unionized workers at Dominion Diamond Ekati Corporation voted in favour of ratifying the new tentative agreement with their employer. The voting took place over the course of four weeks to ensure members on differing shifts as well as those on long-term leave had the opportunity to vote.  The new four-year collective agreement will expire on May 31, 2019.

By Todd Parsons Editorial note: PSAC members are currently in bargaining with Dominion Diamond Corp. with bargaining dates set for mid-January. What does it mean to be committed to the North and more importantly the development of Northern society?
