PSAC North is proud to offer members a union education program that ranks among the best and most comprehensive in Canada.

We provide members with learning opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, and personal confidence. Union education encourages participation and promotes mutual respect and understanding between members and the union leadership. A trained membership is an active membership and active members build a strong union.

By Jack Bourassa   Buying groceries, going to the drugstore or running errands around town sounds like everyday activities that many of us do without thinking twice. Whatever we do, there is at least one activity that we all share: shopping. We all have "purchase power" and we use it every day. I wrote in the past about buying local, buying Canadian products and supporting our economy. I want to add to the list: buy from a store where employees are treated fairly.

The PSAC North NWT Regional Women’s Committee is celebrating International Women’s Day by delivering bags with personal care items to women and youth shelters in Yellowknife. The committee is sending out bags to other communities: Hay River, Fort Smith, Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. NWT Women’s Committee thanks all members, volunteers and sponsors.  Sponsors:

Students, wearing pink t-shirts, gathered at the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife on February 27 to participate in National Anti-Bullying Day, known as Pink Shirt Day. In addition to Yellowknife, students from Behchoko and N’Dilo also participated in Pink Shirt Day events. Jack Bourassa, Regional Executive Vice President for PSAC North and Hon. Caroline Cochrane, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment shared their insights with participants and guests. Students presented and shared their vision on how to eliminate bullying.

On December 11, the NWT Regional Women's Committee held an engaging forum on domestic violence. Rebecca Thompson, PSAC North's Grievance Officer was guest speaker.

PSAC North NWT Area Council donated $500 to the food bank in Hay River, in addition to $500 to Yellowknife Food Bank.  Dawna O’Brien delivering the cheque.

NWT Women’s Committee donated to the Family Support Centre Shelter located in Hay River. The committee would like to thank Quality Furniture for free shipping to airport and Buffalo Air Express for free shipping to Hay River.

A tentative agreement on behalf of PSAC/UNW members working for the Fort Resolution Housing Authority was reached on September 20, 2018. The new agreement is for four years, and will expire on March 31, 2021. The bargaining team recommends ratification of this tentative agreement that includes economic increases, increased allowances and other gains. For more information, contact us.

Women experiencing homelessness face an added challenge every month. The NWT Disabilities Council has launched a donation drive asking for feminine hygiene products to help women experiencing homelessness access the appropriate supplies they need.  Responding to this important call, PSAC North’s NWT Regional Women’s Committee donated hygiene products to the council. The committee encourages people to help support this initiative.
