PSAC North is proud to offer members a union education program that ranks among the best and most comprehensive in Canada.

We provide members with learning opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, and personal confidence. Union education encourages participation and promotes mutual respect and understanding between members and the union leadership. A trained membership is an active membership and active members build a strong union.

PSAC North NWT Regional Women’s Committee celebrated International Women’s Day by delivering donations to women’s shelters across the Northwest Territories. The committee organized “Purse Drive” and received around 150 purses from women in Inuvik and Yellowknife. Committee members and volunteers packed personal care items in each purse and delivered them to shelters.   PSAC North NWT Regional Women’s Committee would like to thank sponsors and donors:

By Jack Bourassa    International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since more than a century ago and is now celebrated on March 8. This is not only a day to celebrate, but it’s time to take action. More than a century ago thousands of women were marching in the streets of New York demanding voting rights and better living standards: gender equality, better pay, shorter working hours, access to childcare, etc. The protests turned viral across North America and the world.

National Telephone town halls with members (PA, SV, TC and EB groups) will be held on March 9 and 10. Each call is 30 minutes long and will focus on bargaining and the strike votes. PSAC National President Chris Aylward will be the featured speaker on the English calls. PSAC National Executive Vice President Magali Picard will be the featured speaker on the French calls. Members are encouraged to join the call with their preferred timing and language:   March 9  Atlantic (English): 6pm EST Ontario (English): 7pm EST

In addition to the many benefits and rights, PSAC members in good standing can apply to attend and participate in national and regional events, conferences, conventions and more! As a member in good standing, you can elect your union officers, run for positions in the union and have a bigger role in the labour movement.

On this Valentine’s Day, let’s be grateful and celebrate the women in our lives and beyond. Let’s raise awareness and take action to stop gender inequality that affects women nationally and around the world.

  Do you have a purse, in good condition, that you no longer use? PSAC North NWT Women’s Committee is collecting purses that will be filled with toiletries and donated to all women’s shelters in the NWT on March 8 for International Women’s Day.   You can drop purses off at the PSAC North office (4910-53rd Street - Suite # 201), Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Our democracy deserves a fair voting system. Every vote must count. The current “winner-take-all” voting system contradicts the fundamental democratic rights of being fairly represented in federal and provincial/territorial legislatures.

By Dawn Skinner, PSAC North NWT Regional Women’s Committee   Period poverty is a pervasive issue in Canada and yet many of us may ask what period poverty is. In a nutshell, 'period poverty' refers to having a lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints. It has been called a great barrier to equality and low income, homeless and marginalized women bear the brunt of it.

Conciliation Meetings Scheduled The UNW/PSAC bargaining team is eager to get back to the table to reach a fair agreement with the City of Yellowknife. Since the City presented a final offer before negotiations were scheduled to end, the only way to return to the table is through Conciliation.
