The renewed federal and territorial political landscape has kept PSAC North on its toes. We have been monitoring closely and cautiously optimistic the performance of both the Liberal government, and of the NWT 18th Legislative Assembly. Read about everything we've been up to in my REVP Report.
People's Budget Meeting (Yellowknife, April 21 at 7 PM at the Baker Centre)

Alternatives North is holding a People’s Budget Consultation Meeting to gather input on spending priorities for the next territorial budgets.   The Meeting takes place Thursday April 21 at 7 PM at the Baker Centre, 5710 50 Avenue in Yellowknife.  
PSAC presses government to fix Phoenix pay system

Federal public service workers deserve to receive their salaries in a timely fashion. And they should not have to face delays or errors due the former Conservative government’s decision to consolidate payroll services. That is the message that Chris Aylward, PSAC’s National Executive Vice-President, delivered in a meeting with Public Services and Procurement Canada on April 7.

Keep health care public

By Jack Bourassa, Regional Executive Vice President for the NorthAs published in the Yellowknifer, April 2016 Privatizing long-term care in the Northwest Territories will drastically reduce the quality of care for our seniors and increase the cost for taxpayers. With the territory’s senior population quickly blossoming – the GNWT predicts that by the year 2034, 11.6 per cent of the NWT’s population will be aged 70 years or older – the government is frantically searching for space in long-term care homes.
Defining and addressing poverty in the NWT

By Jack Bourassa, Regional Executive Vice President for the North   Defining poverty is not an easy undertaking. In Canada, different groups use different indicators to measure poverty, but no measure has been officially endorsed by the federal government. Using a proxy measure of poverty (Low Income Cut-Off), it has been shown that the average child poverty in Canada is 17%, while the percentage for indigenous children is as high as 60% in some Canadian jurisdictions.
GNWT applauded for public budget consultations

Public consultations, mandate are important steps in open government The Public Service Alliance of Canada North (PSAC North) commends the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) for their efforts to consult the public about the territory’s budget and fiscal strategy. Public input is an important step in making government accessible to residents of the territory, and makes the government more accountable and transparent.
Free trade? More like economy freefall.

We’re busy worrying about the price of food, the health of our loved ones and our land, the security of our jobs (or lack thereof), and at best keeping up with local politics. And when FTAs are negotiated in secrecy, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), it makes it virtually impossible to understand their ramifications.
