On International Women’s Day 2018, the PSAC invites its members to celebrate our many victories and efforts in fighting for equality for all women.

The launch of a National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in 2016 came North this year  after years of struggle by Aboriginal women, with the unflagging support of PSAC members.

Fighting violence against women

According to a major survey by the Canadian Labour Congress, more than one out of three working women (37%) will experience domestic violence during their lifetime. Each year, seven per cent of women workers are victims of domestic violence.

PSAC is campaigning to prevent domestic violence with our Moose Hide Campaign. Wearing this moose hide signifies your commitment to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in your life and to work together with other men to end violence against women and children.

In the past, PSAC has hosted the Women’s Forum on Domestic Violence at Work in order to provide members, elected officials and staff with an opportunity to discuss possible courses of action. Delegates at regional women’s conferences and at the National Health and Safety Conference in 2016 as well as at the National Women’s Conference in 2017 spoke on this important issue. 

We will also continue to work with the Canadian Network of Women’s Shelters and Transition Houses on a national action plan on violence against women. 
Our PSAC Regional NWT Women's Committee recently showed support for area shelters by providing personal care kits. 

Fighting for better child care

The implementation of a universal child care system continues to be an essential condition for ensuring full equality for women. In collaboration with its coalition partners, the PSAC is promoting the “Shared framework for building an early childhood education and care system for all.”

With the election of a majority Liberal government, there is now renewed hope that we can move ahead on our agenda. The federal government has started consultations as a first step toward “delivering affordable, flexible and fully inclusive child care.” We urge all PSAC members to lobby all levels of government (federal, provincial, territorial and Aboriginal) to help push this initiative forward.

PSAC works for women

For 50 years now, our union has been fighting to defend the rights of working women. At the bargaining table, in the courts and through our mobilization efforts, we continue to fight for equality and women’s rights.
