By Jack Bourassa, Regional Executive Vice President for the North (abbreviated version published in the Yellowknifer, October 12 2016)  Here’s a $150 million-dollar question: if you knew your single-mom neighbour lives with her children in unsuitable housing, surviving off food banks, would you help out? Or would you give a hand to a businessperson with a vague intention to set up shop down the street, by helping them pave the road instead?

In the fall of 2015, 41 individuals from 24 labour, Indigenous, social and environmental agencies met in Yellowknife to begin work on a common front or ways to take collective action on common causes and values. At that time, federal, territorial, and municipal elections were looming and many of us were working hard on progressive reforms both within and outside the electoral system. A report was produced entitled We Can Do Better: Building an NWT Common Front, September 2015.

This summer in Canada’s North has been anything but uneventful. Federally-organized town halls, bargaining challenges, community involvement and bridge-building – it’s all been fun! To make the mix even more interesting, I underwent surgery, which thankfully hasn’t succeeded in keeping me down for long. Read the rest in my report attached below.

The PSAC's Union Development Program (UDP) has been one of the most comprehensive union leadership training programs in Canada for more than 35 years. This program provide an advanced learning opportunity for emerging leaders to develop the necessary analysis and skills to identify and support union priorities, and to expand our pool of skilled activists who can inspire others. Are you passionate about standing up for unions and workers’ rights? Do you believe in fairness, social justice and human rights?

This Labour Day, we celebrate the power of our solidarity. PSAC has achieved some important wins this past year, which were the result of sustained member activism. Last October, the decade of Harper Conservative rule came to an end. Our members came together and mobilized against the Conservatives’ irresponsible cuts to Canada’s public services. We have been promised respect from the new Prime Minister, and we intend to hold him to his promise.

By Jack Bourassa, Regional Executive Vice President for the North As published in the Yellowknifer, July 2016 We would never move. Maybe inland, but never too far, my Inuvialuit friend says, with a firm certainty in her smile. I’m learning from her about environmental issues in Tuktoyaktuk in preparation for the Climate Change Townhall recently held by the federal government in Yellowknife.
