Health and Safety Committee 


The workplace is too often dangerous to our health. Every year, deaths, injuries and chronic diseases take their toll. The Health and Safety Committee is focused on prevention and on maintaining the highest degree of physical and mental health. 

Our conference call meetings can easily accommodate you – no matter where you live. Add your voice to the events and initiatives that we organize and develop expertise in Health and Safety.

Our mandate

The objectives of the PSAC North Regional Health & Safety Committees are to identify, promote and assist union actions around workplace health and safety by:

  • Educating, politicizing and mobilizing Health and Safety activists by making links between themselves, theunion, the workplace, andWorkers’ Safety and Compensation Boards

  • Empowering, uniting and engaging all union members to take action for Occupational Health and Safety

  PSAC North NWT Regional Health and Safety Committee organized an Outreach series of events: “Take a Moment for Safety.” It involved meeting people on Market Days at Somba K’e Park in Yellowknife. Each person was asked for a safety tip that they would live by. Adults and children shared insights on on how to stay safe.

Members of PSAC North Regional Council met in Iqaluit. The three day meeting included important discussions about campaigns and upcoming regional convention, strategy sessions, website and media orientation, and a presentation by guest speakers including Anne Tennier, President of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.  Mumilaaq Qaqqaq took us through a journey in history with her presentation about Inuit history and life before and after colonization.

The pan-Canadian survey conducted in 2014 called, “Can Work Be Safe, When Home Isn’t”, look at the links between personal life and work life and the results are surprising.

PSAC North supports partnering organizations like Yukon Women's Transition Home, which has put together a series of videos to help those involved in a crisis. The three-part video series is called "Together for Safety" and involves six Whitehorse women's groups and Whitehorse RCMP working together to provide educated assistance for victims of sexualized assault or domestic violence.
