PSAC North asks citizens to wear an orange shirt on Saturday, September 30 to commemorate the Every Child Matters campaign. The day recognizes all of those who experienced the trauma of residential schools and recommits our support for national reconciliation with indigenous peoples. In the fall of 2015, 41 individuals from 24 labour, Indigenous, social and environmental agencies met in Yellowknife to begin work on a common front or ways to take collective action on common causes and values. At that time, federal, territorial, and municipal elections were looming and many of us were working hard on progressive reforms both within and outside the electoral system. A report was produced entitled We Can Do Better: Building an NWT Common Front, September 2015.

More and more Northerners are turning to food banks to sustain themselves. PSAC North has pledged to assist food banks and the families they support through the Healthy Apple Campaign. How it works It’s as easy as one, two, three! 1.      Local food banks inform PSAC volunteers what food items they need. 2.      PSAC volunteers label those items on grocery store shelves. 3.      Shoppers pick up labeled food items and donate them to the food bank. Submitted by the NTFL For three years Local 32 has joined the Coldestnightoftheyear.org in helping to spread awareness about homelessness and raise money for a local charity. This year 11 groups in Yellowknife have pledged to raise $25,000 for The Yellowknife Salvation Army to renovate their Emergency Men’s Shelter Kitchen where they serve lunch and supper to those in need in Yellowknife.

How PSAC is working to end violence against women December 6 marks the anniversary of the Montréal Massacre, where 14 young women were killed at the École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, PSAC members across the country renew their commitment to eliminate all forms of violence against women. PSAC works for women

Alternatives North and the Council of Canadians NWT Chapter staged the “We Can Do Better”  planning session September 19 in Yellowknife to  work toward  an NWT common front movement to promote social justice and plan actions to encourage northerners to vote.
