Territorial Legislation

On Nov. 4th, the GNWT launched a website that tracks the progress of various departments on priorities outlined in the GNWT's 2016-2019 mandate. PSAC North commends the Government of the Northwest Territories for their effort to improve openness and transparency.  Read below excerpt from the press release from the Department of the Executive:

McLeod, Caroline Cochrane, Alfred Moses, Louis Sebert will be hosting a Public Open House at the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife on October 18. 7 - 9 pm, Great Hall, NWT Legislative Assembly Join in the conversation and ask them about issues that matter to you and our territory, such as how are they planning to reach the ambitious goals they've set out in the Mandate of the 18th Legislative Assembly.

Public consultations, mandate are important steps in open government The Public Service Alliance of Canada North (PSAC North) commends the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) for their efforts to consult the public about the territory’s budget and fiscal strategy. Public input is an important step in making government accessible to residents of the territory, and makes the government more accountable and transparent.

Every employee should have the right to feel safe when they go to work every day.That’s why the Safety Advisory Committee helped draft better language to protect workers with new Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.But the draft regulations have been collecting dust on the desks of both territorial ministers since 2011, and every year more workers die on the job because of it.
Devolution Northwest Territories

A heated meeting to debate the merits of devolution in the northwest Territories brought in a full crowd at the Explorer Hotel.  Those in favour of handing over control of Crown land and resources over to the territory were happy to see the government move in this promising new direction, but were against the idea of having one super board control the assets, arguing it won't benefit the region.  Here's a summary of the hearing, along with a poignant article in the Yellowknifer concerning the hearing.
